Neurologic Music Therapy®

Evidence-Based Neurorehabilitation Through Rhythm & Music

Neurologic Music Therapy® (NMT) is an evidence-based clinical treatment system that uses specific elements of music—such as rhythm, tempo, melody, and dynamics—to address movement, speech, cognitive, and sensory impairments resulting from neurologic injury or disease.

At DrumHeart, Neurologic Music Therapy services are provided by Michael Kenny, MT-BC, NMT, a board-certified music therapist and Neurologic Music Therapy Affiliate, originally trained in 2015 and recertified through advanced training in 2025 via the Academy of Neurologic Music Therapy®.

What Is Neurologic Music Therapy®?

Neurologic Music Therapy® is a standardized, research-driven treatment system grounded in neuroscience. Unlike traditional music therapy approaches that may focus on emotional expression or psychosocial goals, NMT applies music as a precise neurological stimulus to retrain brain function.

Music is a “hard-wired” brain language. Research shows that rhythm and music activate motor, speech, cognitive, and emotional networks simultaneously, often at a subconscious level. NMT uses this innate neural response to:

  • Support neuroplasticity

  • Reroute damaged neural pathways

  • Improve functional outcomes

  • Enhance quality of life

NMT addresses non-musical goals through carefully designed music-based interventions—no musical background required.

How Neurologic Music Therapy Works

Neurologic Music Therapy interventions are built on scientific knowledge of how the brain perceives, processes, and produces music. Structured rhythmic and musical cues are used to:

  • Prime and organize motor systems

  • Improve timing, sequencing, and coordination

  • Support speech and vocal control

  • Enhance attention, memory, and executive functioning

  • Engage bilateral brain networks

By activating multiple neural systems at once, NMT facilitates functional reorganization of the brain, often resulting in faster, more durable rehabilitation outcomes.

Michael works collaboratively with PTs, OTs, SLPs, physicians, nursing staff, and caregivers to ensure integrated, goal-driven care.
