Reinhard Flatischler, creator of TaKeTiNa, explains the process

What is TaKeTiNa? More information here!
Finally an opportunity to experience a sense of calm and stillness of mind.  Connect to a state of peace and relaxation, experience a deep release from stress and anxiety.  Learn how to connect with your inner rhythms, become more aware of your capacity to attain a sense of accomplishing what you need to do “in you own timing”.  Discover how music is at the core of your being and how by connecting with this music within can bring you happiness, balance, and a sense of connection to others.  Revealed!  The secret of understanding all music, movement, and dance, and how they are connected to every aspect of our daily living!  You are about to learn about learning, and as importantly, how you learn, and how to learn!  Learn that mistakes are opportunities to grow and find new solutions to old problems.  Learn to accept failure as a part of the process for going more deeply into any type of learning situation.

Testimonials

“I was deeply moved by a particular feeling, something I had never felt before. In a moment like a dream, during the chanting and dancing, I felt as if I was doing something ancestral, as if my body and soul knew this already from a far back experience, and I felt as if I was not just myself, but a timeless soul, constantly reincarnated, and at that moment i was one with my passed ancestors.” Ben T.

“I have had profound results in terms of my life rhythm both personally and professionally. I am able to focus better, my anxiety is less provoked, and feel more relaxed when handling challenging situations. I am grateful for my newly found skills and finally experience happiness and a sense of calm in my life.  Grateful for this experience and to Michael for bringing me back to “my beat” “my rhythm “my dance.” Dawn R

“I have been most fortunate to have experienced TaKeTiNa through Michael Kenny in the Dallas, Texas area. I’d never heard of it until he invited me to attend the practice group. Being curious and knowing Michael’s depth, trustworthiness, and expertise in other subject areas, I agreed to go. What an adventure! I had no idea of the treasures I was going to uncover–and am still uncovering! I’ve been on a journey for the last 15 years to “know” myself– and to love, accept, rework or release, and honor whatever I find, because all of it makes me who I am.  The TaKeTiNa experience is showing me not only how far I’ve come, but it shines a light into areas I didn’t even know were there!” Sharon F

What TaKeTiNa has meant to me:

From the very first time I got my hands on a copy of Reinhard Flatischler’s book “The Forgotten Power of Rhythm” in 1996, I knew I was looking at something that was going to change my life.  Over the next several years TaKeTiNa moved occasionally across my radar but never in a way or at a time that I was able to attend.  Then in 2008 I saw that Zorina Wolf was leading a 3-day workshop in Austin, TX.  I had to go!  It was like coming home, like finding the sweet nectar of the flower of music.  Since I had gone into music therapy and dedicated my life to studying, teaching, and practicing the art and science of using music as a healing modality, this was just what I was looking for.  After that 3-Day workshop, I eagerly signed up for the 3-year TaKeTiNa basic teacher certification training.  Through the course of this intensive and challenging process I learned more about the inner workings of my mind, my connections and lack thereof between my mind and body, and my inner relationship with myself than I had ever encountered before.  My friends tell me I am more tolerant, calm, and centered as a result of my TaKeTiNa training, and I tell them that is only the tip of the iceberg!

Michael Kenny, MMT, MT-BC, is now the only certified TaKeTiNa teacher in Texas.  He is a music therapist, educator, and performer based in Dallas,Texas.  Michael has both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music therapy.  He has provided music therapy for Dallas, Garland, and Cedar Hill schools, taught world rhythms at Richland College, and works as a private therapist with many populations. He plays a wide variety of instruments and provides arts-in-education programs and teaches, leads drum circles and rhythm events in the Dallas area and beyond, and is president of the non-profit Drums Not Guns.  Michael has over 15 years of experience as a music therapist, and brings a sense of healing, sacredness, and wellness to every musical experience.

Heaven Meets Earth Yoga Studio

James and Natalie Word and I traded roles in leading and playing surdo for this session.  As far as we know, the first TaKeTiNa to be offered in the Chicago area.  It was a nice session, and we got excellent feedback, all the participants wanted to know how to find out more about it, and when they could do more TaKeTiNa!  We may have to go back to Chicago again soon!

I loved that two of the participants bought copies of Reinhard Flatischler’s book “The Power of Rhythm – TAKETINA

Here is a link to the beautiful flier that James made

TaKeTiNa has been developed and refined for over 40 years. More info at taketina.com.

No experience necessary. You will be gently guided through the process by expert facilitators.

TaKeTiNa at the 2012 American Music Therapy Conference

an earthly emergence
an earthly emergence
Climbing out from a hole under a tree in an old-growth forest

What a wonderful experience it was to officially present TaKeTiNa with James Word of Rhythm in Action for the first time to a national music therapy conference.  Those attending the conference represent the entire music therapy community of  professionals, students, and related disciplines!  Truly, the winds of music therapy are changing and they are blowing up a musical storm!

This was held in St. Charles IL, at the Pheasant Run Resort on October 11, 2012 and was presented as a 5-hour CMTE continuing education course.

James came out from the San Francisco Bay area to lead the sessions, while I supported the process with the voice, surdo and ankle bells.  James’ wife Natalie participated as well by setting an example for the participants and strengthening and stabilizing the field by singing, stepping and clapping with the other participants!

Thanks so much to James and Natalie, for all the learning, the talks, sharing, and support!

The course description as published on the AMTA website reads:

“This workshop provides an experiential introduction to the process of TaKeTiNa, with a focus on the development of the TaKeTiNa process and its application in music education and therapy, instruments used, the teacher training process, and the multi-dimensional approach of music, movement, speech, visualization, polyrhythmic relationships, and visual arts. Benefits can include body-brain synchronization, simultaneous awareness of multiple channels of sensory input, increased internalization of poly-rhythmic relationships, and increased rhythmic stability. Participants will take part in gentle rhythmic movement, exploring multiple levels of rhythm in the body, as well as call and response singing. No instruments are needed since focus is on the activation of the body and voice.”

What people are saying about TaKeTiNa in DFW:

“I learn. And I love it! I appreciate the both of you for giving birth to a profound and beautiful vehicle for challenge and growth in a safe and nurturing environment. I thank you for opening yourselves and sharing knowledge, insight and vulnerability…for creating a mirror wherein we can look within and become aware of what’s been there all along.”  Sharon F

“For me Taketina is a vehicle for connection.  Connection with myself, connection with the rest of the circle, connection with the rhythm and its components, and connection with a deep internal peace.  Each week our group gets together is a unique experience.  I never know what will open up for me before I go, but I always know something will, and that some insight or transformation will occur.” Paul C

“I have been attending Taketina with Michael Kenny as the facilitator off and on for the past year.
I am a shy, introverted person by nature and have difficulty interacting in groups. I also have performance anxiety at times.
I feel that my experiences with Taketina have helped me “come out”, in a sense. I have become more comfortable in groups and less judgmental about my “performance”. Anyway, just wanted to share this and say thanks” Joely R
“I would really like to share with you are the positive changes I see in my life as a result of practicing Taketina with Michael:
1.  I’ve learned to lighten up a bit and experience childlike fun again!
2.  I am now able to laugh at my “mistakes” in Taketina and in life
3.  There is nothing I have experienced to date that gets me into the Present Moment, and keeps me there, like Taketina
4.  I have never felt my energetic body so intensely as when we are lying down after Taketina
5.  I am able to feel, and allow, rhythm to flow through me (that is, when I can get out of the way and allow it to BE!)”  Liz W

“The first session is one I still remember as I was deeply moved by a particular feeling, something I had never felt before. In a moment like a dream, during the chanting and dancing, I felt as if I was doing something ancestral, as if my body and soul knew this already from a far back experience, and I felt as if I was not just myself, but a timeless soul, constantly reincarnated, and at that moment i was one with my passed ancestors. It was I very unique feeling and it is still difficult to express what exactly I felt.” Ben T

“I have had profound results in terms of my life rhythm both personally and professionally. I am grateful for my newly found skills and finally experience happiness and a sense of calm in my life.   Grateful for this experience and to Michael for bringing me back to “my beat” “my rhythm “my dance.” Dawn R

TaKeTiNa has been described as “full body kirtan”.  “The Ta Ke Ti Na process is a path that empowers us to enter, experience, and internalize a state of mind where the consciousness of simultaneity enables us to cut through the illusion of polarity and create a new sense of wholeness. Through Ta Ke Ti Na, we are able to understand how chaos can be a creative power. Simultaneously experiencing several different rhythms anchored in our body movements opens new dimensions of our awareness. Ta Ke Ti Na invites us to listen to the ‘
“pulse of life.”
